When thinking of Science and Technology, images of advanced laboratories and electronic gadgets come to mind. But Science and Technology have existed since the dawn of man, and every man-made object we encounter each day can be directly linked to a scientific or technological origin.
Technology is the creation of tools that human beings invent to make their lives easier, and also the crafting of techniques to best use those tools to improve the quality of their lives and the advancement of society. Almost all man-made objects, from a basic water pail to the most advanced supercomputer, are examples of technology invented to make daily tasks easier to accomplish.
Science is the regimented study of nature. Science observes natural occurrences, usually phenomena like gravity and wind over which humans have no control, in an attempt to better understand why these phenomena happen in the way they do. There are well-understood rules to conducting scientific experiments, and the results of properly conducted experiments are generally accepted within the scientific community. Each scientific discovery is a piece of an extremely large puzzle that seeks to fully understand nature.
Many are intimidated by science and technology because our world seems so advanced and because the knowledge required to understand the latest advances seems so high. Science and technology, however, are part of life every moment of every day. The bed you sleep in is technology created through studying the science of sleep. The transportation you use is technology created through studying the sciences of motion, combustion, metals and alloys.
Technology is usually created through science as an attempt to harness the natural world in a way that is most advantageous to the human condition. Science explains the universe, and technology uses scientific knowledge to the benefit of mankind.
